Q&A: Nathaniel Jones, Secondary coach for UMHB football

BELTON- The UMHB coaching staff is noticeably different entering the 2022 season, as compared to last year’s, especially on the offensive side of the ball, where every full-time coach is in his first season with the program. On the defense, many of the same faces are still there, such as defensive coordinator Jack Johnson and defensive line/special teams coordinator Nick Brace. But there is one new face, the most recent addition to the staff: Nathaniel Jones. Hired in July, Jones has journeyed from New Orleans high schools, to pro teams in Europe, and to Dubuque, Iowa, as the cornerbacks coach and special teams coordinator in 2021 at Loras College (D-III). He will be the Cru’s secondary coach, working primarily with the cornerbacks and safeties whose play will be vital throughout the fall.

With its season opener just a week away, the varsity roster for the UMHB football team battled Monterrey Tech under the lights of Crusader Stadium on Saturday night in a scrimmage. The team showed room for improvement, but looked sharp after its first three weeks of fall camp. KJ Miller had a number of long punt returns, the receiving corps was on point, and the defensive line found its rhythm early on, putting pressure on the opposing quarterback, even against a stout offensive line for Monterrey Tech.

True To The Cru’s Russell Marwitz captured the action from the sidelines, as UMHB emerged victorious in the contest. Below is a collection of his field-level photos. To see more from the scrimmage, be sure to visit his website at RussellMarwitz.com.

In game uniform for the first time this fall, the UMHB football team’s junior varsity squad took to Crusader Stadium on Friday night, battling UANL Tigres, from Nuevo Leon, Mexico. Though UANL prevailed, the Crusaders made great strides in their first contest of the year against an outside opponent, and several freshmen stood out, such as running back Trace Holmes, from Sweeney, Texas, who had a number of spectacular rushing attempts, and Cameron Mitton, who was all over the field at a variety of positions.

True To The Cru’s Luke Zayas was on the sidelines for the scrimmage, and covered all the action through his high-quality photos. Below is a collection of his field-level shots from Friday’s game.
