BELTON- Ben Allen can still recall the sights and sounds of that NCAA Tournament match, now 13 years ago. The stands were full at the Cru soccer field, fans clad in white, cheering UMHB on in its debut in the national tournament.

BELTON- 12 seconds showed on the large scoreboard at the far end of the Cru Soccer Field. Slowly a cheer erupted into a roar. Phone cameras were pulled out. Barry Elkins raised his hands into the air in triumph. History was going to be made indeed, on this November evening.

Monday was a day of anticipation for the men’s and women’s soccer teams of UMHB.
Selection Monday, as it’s known, was a little less stressful for the Crusaders, as both teams had already clinched spots in the national tournament with ASC championship wins on Saturday. But regardless, UMHB’s teams did not know where or when or who they would face.

Those were head coach Clif Carroll’s words hours after his squad’s elimination from the NCAA Tournament in the Elite Eight round. And in the fight his Crusaders were. For an entire 45 minutes. They did not back down, and while Elmhurst emerged with the trip to the Final Four, defeating UMHB, 87-84, in heartbreaking fashion, Carroll could at least find solace in the fact that his team fell in a one-possession contest that was anybody’s game down the stretch.

LEXINGTON- For the third straight year, the UMHB women’s basketball team has reached the Sweet 16. The Crusaders will be joined by Transylvania, Trine, and Springfield in this weekend’s sectional pod in Lexington, Kentucky, set to be hosted by the Pioneers of No. 3-ranked Transylvania, on Friday and Saturday.

MEMPHIS- Everyone on UMHB’s roster remembered the game three weeks ago in Belton, when ETBU not only defeated the Cru on senior day, but also snapped the team’s 20-game win streak and perfect conference record.
