UMHB men’s basketball to face Texas State on Dec. 13

BELTON- Clif Carroll coached his first game as UMHB’s head men’s basketball coach inside Strahan Arena the day before Thanksgiving on Nov. 25, 2020. Two years later, he and his team will return to the 10,000-seat arena in San Marcos, facing Texas State on Dec. 13.

The tip-off time will be 7 p.m. CT.

The contest, which will be an exhibition for UMHB but a regular-season game for Texas State, pits the Crusaders against a D-I opponent for the fifth time in Carroll’s three seasons as head coach. In 2020-21, UMHB faced Texas State and Sam Houston State. Last season, road trips to Stephen F. Austin and UT-Arlington were on the schedule.

The announcement of this game comes after Texas State released its complete 2022-2023 schedule on Tuesday afternoon, The Bobcats are coming off a 21-8 season in which they won the Sun Belt Conference regular season title, but were upset in the quarterfinal round of the conference tournament, before making an NIT appearance.

Texas State returns seven from last year’s team as well as a pair of transfers from the University of Florida in Elijah Kennedy and Tuongthach Gatkek. Terrence Johnson is entering his third season as the program’s head coach, and has led Texas State to consecutive 18-plus win seasons.

UMHB posted a 28-2 record last season, winning both the ASC regular season title and tournament title. The Crusaders reached the NCAA Tournament for just the seventh time in program history and the first since 2013, winning three games.

Entering 2022-23, the Cru has a stacked non-conference schedule that includes two road trips to the west coast against high-quality opponents, including Pomona-Pitzer and Whitworth. To read about the entire schedule, be sure to check out our article below.
