On Christmas Day, UMHB football received a commitment from a standout wide reciever in Rockdale’s Anthony Dansby. A fleet-footed, two-sport star with a natural leaping ability, Dansby looks to make an immediate impact with the Cru offense next fall. With offers from several competitive NAIA and D3 programs, Dansby is sure to make an impact early. I caught up with him recently, and here’s what he said.
What drew you to UMHB?
AD: Being here, they made me feel like I was at home. They kept everything real, they were honest. I really liked that.
Was there a specific coach that you felt like you really connected with?
AD: Coach Bill Bleil. (Works with the Cru offensive line).
What are some of your memories from you high school football career at Rockdale?
AD: Just playing with my closest friends. We would always celebrate anytime one of us did something great. One of my most key memories was when Cam’ron Valdez broke the school’s rushing record, and celebrating with him and [wide receiver/cornerback] Kesean Raven. [Playing a big role] is something that you dream about. You are playing a big role, and you know your abilities, so it is really awesome that it happens that way.
You’re a two sport athlete, playing both basketball and football. How do you think playing basketball has helped you in football?
AD: In basketball, I grab rebounds a lot, so jumping and going over people helped a lot in football season. That’s what I do as a receiver, I go up for passes over the defenders, especially on jumpballs.
Do you have any goals for your time at UMHB?
AD: I just want to show out, and work my way into being a starter as a freshman.
