BELTON, Texas- Football season has returned at UMHB, and while it may be a shortened slate this spring, the goals and level of play exhibited year in and year out by the Cru has not changed. On Saturday, the spring schedule will kick off, as the Crusaders take on Belhaven in Jackson, Mississippi.   • Injury/Inactive report: WR Caleb Eagans (Ankle) did not make the trip…Two unnamed WRs will not make the trip to do a “disciplinary issue” according to head coach Pete Fredenburg…LB Keith Gibson (Knee) is questionable for Saturday.
  • The Crusaders were selected No. 1 in the ASC Preseason Poll, released on Friday. UMHB has won a share of the ASC Championship 15 times and received 99 first-place votes in Friday’s poll.
  • FS Jefferson Fritz was selected as the conference’s Preseason Defensive Player of the Year and K Anthony Avila was named the ASC Preseason Special Teams Player of the Year.

Notes:

  • In the last meeting between the two in 2019, UMHB won 23-13 in its first conference game of the season. Kicker Anthony Avila made three field goals, including one from 44 yards out.
  • Belhaven joins UMHB in the east division of the ASC for this spring season, as the two programs are joined by ETBU, Southwestern and Louisiana College in the five-team division.
  • UMHB leads the series all-time 7-2, with the Cru having won the last seven meetings.
  • Projected to start at quarterback for the Blazers is sophomore quarterback Tim Johnson, who played just two games under center last season.
  • While Belhaven used to be known for an air-raid attack, the Blazers have transitioned to a more balanced offense under the direction of third year head coach Blaine McCorkle. In 2019, Belhaven averaged 17.4 points, 134 yards rushing and 206 yards passing per game.
