BELTON, Texas- The UMHB secondary added a transfer in Deryn Taylor on Wednesday, but lost a major contributor Friday afternoon, as defensive back Drake Johnson announced his decision to enter his name into the transfer portal.
“First I want to thank God for giving me the gift to play the game I love at the next level,” Johnson said in a Twitter post. “I would also like to thank UMHB for allowing me to be part of a championship organization. I want to thank all the coaches, teammates, and staff for pushing me to be my best everyday.
“With that being said, I have officially entered the transfer portal with 3-4 years of eligibility remaining.”
Johnson started at cornerback for the Cru this spring as a sophomore, tallying 16 total tackles, with 12 of those being solo. He had two interceptions, which ranked second on the team, which he returned for 42 yards. The Missouri City, Texas native started all five games during the spring, and posted 1.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks.
He also started four games as a freshman, appearing in 12, while tallying three interceptions and 25 total tackles.
This opens up an opportunity for Jordan See, who was a freshman this year, and second on the depth chart behind Johnson at one of the two cornerback positions. Though safety is Taylor’s primary position, he may possibly compete for the now-vacant starting job.
Johnson is the third known Crusader to transfer from UMHB, as running back Melek Hamilton entered the transfer portal on April 19, and receiver Caleb Eagans, who is headed to ETBU, announced his decision to transfer on April 5.
