UMHB women’s basketball secures transfer guard Paula Rosello Mateu

BELTON, Texas- For the second consecutive day, the UMHB women’s basketball program announced the addition of a mid-season transfer, as Paula Rosello Mateu is set to join the team immediately.

A native of Barcelona, Spain, Mateu makes her fourth collegiate stop after beginning the fall at D-II Christian Brothers College in Memphis, Tennessee. She transferred prior to the Lady Buccaneers’ first game of the season, and will be a junior with UMHB this year.

When asked what made UMHB the right landing spot as she evaluated her transfer options over the last several months, Mateu cited the coaching staff and quality of the program found in Belton.

Prior to her transfer to CBU, Mateu played two years at the junior college level, beginning her career at Miles Community College (Montana), where she averaged 11.0 points per game during the 2017-18 season. She played in 33 games, starting 17 of those, and shot 42 percent from the field, as well as 30.3 percent from three-point range.

She continued her career at McCook Community College in the 2019-20 season, achieving Second Team honors on the Omaha World-Herald’s All-Midlands college women’s junior college basketball team. The 5’8 guard saw the court in 30 games, tallying 11.4 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game. The Indians posted a 22-10 record during that season, winning a game in the Region IX tournament; a game in which Mateu led the team with 16 points.

Also of note is the fact that on the night Mateu scored 20 points in 69-54 victory over Southeast Community College, she went up against current UMHB forward Jayden Widener, who was then a freshman. Now, the two will be teammates.

Mateu played her prep career in Barcelona, starring for Col-legi Badalones.
