BELTON-The UMHB running backs unit has a new addition thanks to an in-conference transfer, as Killeen native Ozias Wright confirmed to True To The Cru on Saturday evening that he has committed to UMHB.

A two-time All-ASC running back at Sul Ross State, Wright is bringing his talents back to Central Texas after four seasons with the Lobos. In Alpine, the 5-foot, 11-inch standout played in 30 career games, totaling 1,230 rushing yards on 265 carries.

He scored 10 rushing touchdowns, averaging 4.6 yards per carry in his SRSU career, and also displayed great hands in catching passes out of the backfield. Wright pulled in 47 receptions for 437 yards and two touchdowns, with an average of 9.3 yards per catch.

In 2018, as a true freshman, the Shoemaker High School product also contributed as the Lobos’ primary kickoff returner, displaying tremendous speed as he tallied 20.1 yards per return on 29 runbacks.

As a sophomore during the abbreviated 2020-21 spring season, Wright’s 377 rushing yards–a career high–over just five games earned him a Second Team spot in the postseason All-ASC honors. He averaged just over 75 yards per game, and scored three times.

In his third collegiate season in 2021, Wright finished the year as a Second Team All-Conference selection. A true dual-threat as a running back, he gained 288 yards on the ground during that campaign, along with 230 receiving yards, and had a total of two scores.

This past year, with SRSU on the rise, he played a crucial role in the Lobos’ offense, leading the team in rushing yards, with 364. His four rushing scores were also a team-high.

Wright announced his intention to enter the transfer portal on Dec. 1, 2022, noting his intention to pursue a master’s degree in sports administration, after graduating from SRSU with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology. He will be a graduate transfer, and has one year of collegiate eligibility remaining.

Stay tuned for an edition of “Catching up with the Commits” featuring Wright, as we will discuss his commitment to UMHB, collegiate journey, and more.
