BELTON- Stanley Asiegbu is coming home.

The Houston native is returning to the Lone Star State as a graduate transfer after playing two seasons at D-III Cal Lutheran University, and will transfer to UMHB for the 2023 season. Asiegbu will have two years of eligibility.

He was a highly-sought after recruit upon entering the transfer portal in November of 2022, earning offers from D-I FCS programs including Campbell, Lamar, Tennessee State, Robert Morris, and Alabama State.

A 6-foot, 3-inch, 230-pound tight end, Asiegbu saw action in seven games with eight receptions for 145 yards and a touchdown for CalLu in 2022. He also played in seven games for the Kingsmen in 2021.

“I loved the culture out here,” Asiegbu told True To The Cru of his commitment to UMHB. “[Those at UMHB] are winners, across the board, not just football. That is something that I want to be a part of.

“During my visit is when me and my mother were blown away from the football staff to administration altogether and was when we ultimately knew that this would be the right place for me. I did not want to go to a D1 just because it was a D1. I wanted to go somewhere that would be a right fit for me and my goals!”

Amazingly, Asiegbu had never played organized football prior to his arrival at CalLu, having originally ventured west to play basketball for the Kingsmen. When that opportunity did not pan out, he pivoted and set his sights on a football career at the collegiate level, improving his skill set tremendously over the period of two short years.

A spectacular basketball player at St. Pius X High School, Asiegbu averaged 10.3 points and 5.2 rebounds as a senior, and originally took his talents to Concordia University (TX) before transferring to CalLu. The footwork and hand-eye coordination developed over many years on the court show up when watching Asiegbu as a tight end on film.

True To The Cru will have a one-on-one interview with Asiegbu coming out in the very near future, so stay tuned for that conversation, as we will discuss his incredible journey and newfound success on the gridiron.
