BELTON-Stanley Asiegbu has quite a story.
After all, how many tight ends pick up offers from FCS schools and D-III national championship programs despite never playing a snap in high school? But that is exactly what Asiegbu, a native of Houston, has done.
A standout basketball player throughout his prep years at St. Pius X High School, he began his collegiate career at Concordia (TX) on the court, before transferring to Cal Lutheran in the fall of 2020. When he arrived, he planned to suit up for the basketball team, but with football as the only sport on campus currently practicing in the wake of the Covid pandemic, he instead tried his hand at football.
With a dedicated work ethic and desire to improve, Asiegbu committed himself to developing in the sport, playing countless hours of Madden, a widely-known football video game, as he learned the playbook, as well as spending extra time on the field developing in his physical skill set. It culminated in him seeing action in seven games during the 2022 season, after which he announced his intent to enter the transfer portal.
Several months later, he finds himself back in the Lone Star State, as an incoming member of a star-studded UMHB offense that will also welcome notable newcomers at the quarterback and running back positions this upcoming season.
True To The Cru’s Riley Zayas recently spoke with Asiegbu about his decision to commit to UMHB, what drew him to football, and how he has developed into a tight end with great hand-eye coordination and an aggressive blocking style off the line.
