Preston Meyer had a lasting impact in the early years of Crusader Football.
A native of Sabinal, Texas, the linebacker garnered All-America selections from D3football.com, Football Gazette, and USAFootball.com in 2000, becoming the first player in program history to earn national honors from three different publications. A total of six Crusaders landed on All-American teams in 2000, as well as Cody Fredenburg (USAFootball.com All-Freshman All-America) and Michael Bradford (USAFootball.com All-Sophomore All-America).
Meyer played a key role in the establishment of UMHB as a force to be reckoned with in the American Southwest Conference, as well as on a national scale. He helped The Cru finish with a winning record for the first time in 2000, as UMHB posted a 9-1 mark and Meyer led the defense with 17.0 tackles for loss. In 2001, the Crusaders clinched a playoff berth for the first time, as Meyer tallied eight solo tackles against Trinity in UMHB’s first postseason appearance. During his senior year, UMHB captured its first ASC title, as Meyer picked up 63 tackles and 16.0 tackles for loss.

In addition to his off-field success, Meyer was part of UMHB’s first unity council, and stayed involved with various community service projects. On one occasion, a teammate’s family lost its home to a devastating fire. Meyer soon lent a helping hand, organizing a car wash fundraiser, helping support the family through the difficult time.
All of these aspects of Meyer’s time in Belton led to him being named to the CRU FAA Hall of Honor. He takes tremendous pride in being a Cru Football alum, yet he isn’t one to tout his individual accomplishments. His humility was seen throughout our conversation on this episode of the True To The Cru Podcast, as we talked about his memories and experiences with UMHB Football. His impact on the program was a significant one, to say the least.
