In an exclusive report published by Cory Hogue of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football on Tuesday morning, sources have indicated that the American Southwest Conference will opt for a double round-robin format for the 2024 football season within league play.
As previously reported, the ASC is down to just four football playing schools this fall; Hardin-Simmons, Mary Hardin-Baylor, East Texas Baptist, and Howard Payne. The double round-robin format, Hogue reported, will see each team play a home-and-home series against its other three league foes. Each ASC program will also need to find four non-conference games in addition to the six league games now scheduled.
While the ASC is below the minimum number of six member institutions to hold an automatic bid to the NCAA playoffs, the league is currently in the first year of a two-year grace period, which allows the league to continue sending its conference champion to the postseason despite having just four football-playing members. This situation comes about after Southwestern departed for the SAA prior to the 2023 season, McMurry’s move to the SCAC for all sports, and the departure of football affiliates Austin College and Texas Lutheran to the SCAC for the 2024 season.
This report will be updated if further information becomes available.
