According to a report from Dave Campbell’s Texas Football on Monday night, the UMHB football team will battle Trinity University (TX) in the upcoming 2023 season, which confirms what sources previously told True To The Cru.
This brings the total number of non-conference games for the Cru to two, with Wisconsin-Whitewater also scheduled for a trip to Belton, as part of a home-and-home scheduling agreement. Last season, UMHB flew north to Wisconsin, where the Warhawks emerged with a 28-24 win in Week 2.
With Southwestern leaving the ASC as a football affiliate, the Cru is expected to have one additional non-conference contest on the schedule, with three non-conference and seven conference games making up the 10-game regular season slate.
UMHB and Trinity have a familiarity as two of Texas’ D-III powerhouse football programs. In each of the last two seasons, the Crusaders and Tigers have battled in the playoffs, with UMHB winning both of those matchups.
The first, played in the 2021 opening round in Belton, saw UMHB prevail, 13-3, as Aphonso Thomas scored the game’s only touchdown with 2:05 remaining. The Cru went onto win the Stagg Bowl that season, and just last year, a 54-0 shutout of Huntingdon set up a second-round meeting between the two in San Antonio. UMHB won there, 24-17, in a closely-contested matchup in the second half.
The two programs have met seven times in the postseason, and just four times in the regular season, with the last regular season meeting coming in an Oct. 5, 2013 matchup. UMHB won that contest 49-7 in Belton, and has won its last seven games against Trinity.
